When it comes to work, looking professional is really important. And this doesn’t necessarily mean choosing the best business suit or the most perfect tie. It also means your workplace and also your habits. I am not sure whether you have ever given it a thought but yes, this is extremely important. Also, it’s difficult to maintain this specially during tight schedules and looming deadlines but ignoring this can have extremely negative consequences.

When I enter a co-worker’s workspace, even if that person is extremely diligent and has a great potential, the first impression which you’ll have is the person’s uncleanliness. So, maintaining a clean and organized work space is very important to your company and its image and more importantly your own health.

  • A clean desk implies organization

Even if you might find this funny, but this is true! If a professional’s work desk is free of all the clutter, those excess papers, the used cups, tissue papers, it is likely that the person is well organized and it’s easy to trust an organized person.

  • It makes you more efficient

Turner says “People who pile paperwork often obscure items underneath the stacks, resulting in wasted time trying to find what they are looking for.” When you place everything in a specific designated place, one, it makes the space clutter free, and two, when it’s easy for you to locate them when needed. Saves a lot of time and effort.

  • You know what to do

When everything is perfectly in place and organized well, you know how and when to start which task. On the contrary when your work space is cluttered and messed up, it tends to make you confused enough to start the day.

  • Reduces work place stress

When your work space is not organized, there are chances that you might miss on that important file which your boss would ask for the first thing in the morning. And you know what happens post that – stress, a lot of stress! This is one added advantage of keeping your desk tidy, you reduce that extra stress and can concentrate on your work better.

  • Being organized boosts confidence

My personal experience says that you are more confident when your things are organized in a better way. Be it home or work, things if organized well and put in their respective places, boosts your confidence. I set aside 5minutes aside when I come to work and before I leave to clean up all the mess of my desk and to organize things. 10minutes of 24hours is not much of what it asks for! Isn’t it?

  • Eat away from your desk

If you know that you are not good at cleaning your desk post the snack sessions, it is advisable to eat away from your desk. What do you think? It is not at all a bad idea to use the pantry of your office to eat that sandwich. Is it?

  • Do not forget digital organization

You must be wondering what that is? Yes, you can and you should be digitally organized as well. I remember almost 4 years back, I used to save all my files on the desktop of my laptop and boooooom! It was a disaster every time I turned on my system and tried looking for something. But I learnt from it. Even today, I am in a habit of downloading all my files to my desktop because it is convenient, right? But, I make sure to organize it at the end of the day or during that tea break. Does it take more than a couple of minutes, NO!!!
