I believe that commitment is a bridge between “what I want” and “how I stick to achieve that in reality.” Although words express commitment, however it is the actions which authenticate it. It is once you have crossed the stages of “thinking about” and “interested” that you actually reach commitment. So, there is either a commitment or nothing at all. You cannot be in between.
“There’s a difference between interest and commitment. When you’re interested in doing something, you do it only when circumstances permit. When you’re committed to something, you accept no excuses, only results.” – Unknown Author
Think of the biggest achievement in your life till now? Which made you really proud! Now if you were to scale your commitment on a scale of 5, how would you rate it? Did you just think of achieving it or you gave all your heart and soul to make it happen? As the above mentioned quote very rightly mentioned that when you want to do something, you do it only if the conditions allow, however, if you are committed towards achieving something, you don’t have an option and you’ll give all your blood to make it possible.
Significance of commitment in life
Let me take an example to explain this. Research has shown that 90% of the people don’t stick to their resolutions. Do you think resolutions are commitments? No, they are not! The resolutions are our interests, things which we want in life. Conditions apply! If scenarios permit! Now, that’s the difference. Consider this now. Your mother is not well and needs care, you won’t make any excuses. You will do it, at all costs. You will find out that time. That’s commitment. And what undermines your commitment is your passion for the target.
Take a look at all the successful people around you. Including some other common traits, you will find them all to be highly committed towards work, towards life, towards people. That’s because it is a pre-requisite for a successful life. Whether it’s about making your relationship work or taking your business to another level, every single situation demands commitment.
Mario Andretti once said “Desire is the key to motivation, but it’s determination and commitment to an unrelenting pursuit of your goal – a commitment to excellence – that will enable you to attain the success you seek.”
For me, commitment is part of the values which were inculcated in me at a very young age by my parents. It’s a part of my personality and I have experienced number of proud moments in life due to this trait. Although it comes naturally to me, but I am conscious and persistent enough to realize them.
I believe be it your personal relationships or career, everything serious demands commitment. Once you decide and know what you are committed to, it is imperative that you will get through no matter what. The motivational words by Zig Ziglar inspire me to another level: “It was character that got us out of bed, commitment that moved us into action, and discipline that enabled us to follow through.”
