Why do we give up so easily?

I came back from an amazing trip to my home, though it was as short as 2 days! Just a couple of days but a quintal of relaxation and happiness. All of you staying away from home might be able to connect with me on this. My parents wanted to take me out for some shopping but since it was a really short trip I didn’t want to waste a lot of time roaming around in the markets. But, one can never win over ‘parents’ so I managed to spend one evening with them shopping and eating out. It’s no less than a paradise, my parents’ home! Nothing on earth can compare the happiness which I get there. The contentment, that feeling which just takes away all the problems, I get it there. I guess everyone does!

It’s a customary for my parents to drop me and stay there till my flight takes off or my train starts moving! Yesterday was no different too. As all of us were waiting and talking, we observed this couple who must be in their early 70s waving to a girl who was accompanied with a kid. The elderly lady was crying continuously and looking at that, my parents became all the way more emotional. When I boarded my train, to my surprise I was sharing the compartment with the same girl. We initiated a casual conversation and I came to know of the bad marriage which she is going through. She had been married for 5years now and had a 3year old kid which was apparently the reason that she was trying to make it work. She sounded depressed as ever and the heartbreaking thing was the poor girl had given up all her hopes, she was just 30. She didn’t have enough guts to fight the society, specially now when she had a 3-year-old to take care of.

Don’t give up, the beginning is always the hardest.

I have met many such people (men and women) who go through bad phases in life. I am not just talking about marriage in particular though. Why are we not ready to fight it out? Why do we give up on the major issues so easily? We are already struggling, right? Why not struggle a little more and get through the solution? It might be painful though, but was the previous situation any better?

One thing is for sure, that when we face problems, our emotions try to take control of us. For instance,

YOU: I’m so depressed because of my consistent bad results

EMOTIONS: It’s not your thing. Stop doing it since it makes you sad.

YOU: May be, I cannot do it.

Now analyze this situation and try to note what is it that was missing from this scenario? It’s the perseverance. All you need to do is to persevere and put your efforts in the right direction. Had it been the case, note the below mentioned conversation with some changes.

YOU: I’m so depressed because of my consistent bad results

EMOTIONS:  These are pity shortcomings and we’ll get over them. We’re just warming up and we command you to persevere and move on.

Now remember this is the most crucial step, the deciding point, and it’s completely your decision. If you decide to give up here, you’ll be giving up on all the hard work and patience that you have had up till now. Being a self-motivator is extremely important, don’t wait for someone else to walk up to you to get that motivation or boost.

Before you give up, think about why you held on to it for so long! – Komal Bhan
